Naxos is the island where the ships that were carrying home, from Crete, the future king of Athens, Theseus, made a stop. Theseus was returning home victorious, after having killed the Minotaur, son of King of Crete Minos, the beast-like (half bull, half human) guardian of the Labyrinth. During his staying in Crete he fell in love with Ariadne, Minos daughter so he left the island eloping with Ariadne. Ariadne had helped him to complete his difficult task.
